A gentle world. Gentle things. Things that are thin, light, and airy. Things that are clear. A soft world that does not harden and shatter, but bends distinctly, wraps around, and supports. The pale colors, lines, and forms Suyeont works with metaphorically convey the shape and texture of the relationships she contemplates. It is a world of perception and values that permeates softly, at times intersects and then merges by seeping in—a world that draws people in and offers a form of salvation.
In order to make the sensations of this world the ground of her paintings, Suyeont first realized a support that is thin and translucent, like a “membrane.” Two layers of soft, light-permeable cotton cloth are placed face to face and adhered to a firm panel, upon which she paints. Unlike asa fabric, which bears pigment with a bluish cast, cotton cloth carries warmth, absorbing paint as if drawing it in, and thus retains a clear, healthy tonality. She then chose as motifs things that are thin and light: tracing paper, threads and strings, the forms of paper folding, and butterfly wings.
Suyeont’s paintings are boldly pared down. They are works distilled and ordered through one or two colors, a handful of motifs, and a few straight lines. She likens these simplified images to “maps.” Because “it is impossible to draw everything,” they are “a collection of symbols containing only the information that is absolutely necessary, so that each viewer may project their own world and unfold it,” or, alternatively, a “diagram.” These quiet paintings suggest a foundational form in which existence itself becomes the salvation of existence.
미농지는 아름다울 미, 짙을 농 자로 불리우는 얇고 반투명한 종이다. 이웃한 풍경과 사물의 빛, 색, 형상을 온 몸으로 투과할 만큼 가늘지만, 실은 나무의 속심으로 만들어졌기에 붓에 묻은 농 짙은 먹을 견뎌낼 만큼, 바람과 습을 막아서는 문풍지로 사용될 만큼 강인하다. 수연은 납작한 화면 위에 엷고 부드러운 세계를 형성하기 위해 이 연한 종이를 떠올렸다.
연한 세계. 연한 것. 얇고 가벼웁고 선선한 것. 그건 맑은 것. 억세어 부서지기보다, 선연히 휘어 감고 감싸 받치는 부드러운 세계. 수연이 다루는 연한 색과 선, 형상들은 그가 응시하는 관계(relationship)의 생김과 촉감을 은유한다. 온화하게 침투하고 때로 교차하다 스미듯 융합하는, 사람을 견인하고 구원하는 인지와 가치의 세계.
수연은 이 세계 안의 감각을 자기의 화면 삼기 위해 먼저 엷고 비침이 있는, ‘막’과 같은 지지체를 구현했다. 쉬이 빛을 투과하는 보드라운 광목천 두 겹을 맞대어 단단한 판넬에 붙이고 그 위에 그림을 그렸다. 푸르스름한 빛을 띈 채 안료를 떠받치는 아사천과 달리 광목천은 따스한 기운을 지니곤 물감을 끌어당기듯 머금어 맑은 혈색을 유지한다. 그리고 미농지, 실과 끈, 종이접기의 형상들, 나비의 날개와 같이 얇고 엷은 것들을 도상으로 택했다.
<트레이싱지>는 미농지를 여러 장 겹칠 때, 겹친 면이 불투명해지는 한편 오히려 낱장일 때보다 밝은 빛을 발하는 모습을 담고 있다. 관계의 은유는 서로 얽히고 교차하다 묶이고 연결되는 실과 끈의 도상에서도 이어진다(<매듭>). 한편 3층의 전실에 한 데 모아 건 <집>과 <보주>, <기둥>, <학>, <백합과 패랭이꽃>, 그리고 <클로버와 수국>은 모두 종이접기의 형상에서 출발한 그림들로, 수연은 납작하고 여린 지면의 성질을 떠올림과 동시에, 종이를 접는 행위가 지니는 가볍고 산뜻한 즐거움을 생각했다. 손 끝에 힘을 주어 무얼 만듦에도 이 행위가 잃지 않는 선연한 즐거움, 이 놀이가 안기는 유희와 자유로운 마음. 무게를 비우는 유희는 <에뛰드>의 화면에서도 발견된다. 윗면에서 아랫면으로 내려올수록, 화면을 따라 그려진 여러 벌의 날개들은 점차 도상을 이루는 선을 하나 둘 잃고 바탕색 또한 옅어진다. 종국엔 선과 색이 비워질 때까지.
실로 수연의 화면들은 대담하게 비워져 있다. 한 두어 가지 색과 도상, 몇 갈래의 반듯한 선으로 정돈되고 축약된 그림. 수연은 이 단순한 화면을 “지도”에 비유한다. “다 그릴 순 없어서”, 그림을 보는 이 각자가 자기 세계를 이입하고 “펼쳐볼 수 있도록 반드시 필요한 정보만을 기입해 둔 상징들의 집합”, 혹은 “약도”. 이 고요한 그림들은 존재가 존재의 구원이 되는 형(形)의 기초를 시사하고 있다.
